Fisheries policy changed
The National Fishery Council approved an 80% quota cut for anchovy, and 5% for common sardine in 2011. Sardine quota was in principle increased by 18% for 2012. Nevertheless, in July 2012, the TAC for sardine was substantially increased from 605,000 to 1,050,000 tonnes after IFOP´s survey showed an increase of biomass. Instead, the quota for anchovy was increased 11% to satisfy the need for a higher bycatch quota in the sardine fishery, against the precautionary approach.
