Gulf of Mexico Shrimp Fishery Improvement Partnership (FIP) Coordinator

Background:
The mission of the Sustainable Fishery Partnership is to maintain healthy ocean ecosystems, enhance fishing livelihoods and secure food supplies. The Partnership improves access to information to guide responsible seafood sourcing, and enhances the ability of seafood companies and partners to influence government fisheries policies and management practices to improve fisheries.

SFP works to improve fisheries through Fishery Improvement Partnerships (FIPs). A FIP is a collaboration between retailers, their suppliers, and NGO advisors that aims to influence government policies and management practices and improve marine conservation and the sustainability of an individual fishery. SFP and partners are launching FIPs for the Gulf of Mexico Shrimp fisheries.

Role:
The SFP is looking for a high caliber individual to assist in running these FIPs and represent SFP on Gulf of Mexico Shrimp fisheries. The position is expected to be based in the United States, preferably in Gulf of Mexico (Texas, Louisiana).

The job is to:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Minimum 5 years experience working in shrimp industry, preferably in Gulf of Mexico.
  2. Bachelor degree required in fisheries science and/or fisheries management
  3. Excellent oral and written English
  4. Excellent communication and organization skills
  5. Ability to work in a flexible, informal environment, and to take the initiative and work as part of a team as well as independently.
  6. Willing to spend up to 30% of his/her time outside his/her home base
  7. Ability and willingness to travel by car and plane nationally and sometimes internationally to remote locations.

The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated leadership in improving fisheries management and marine conservation, and have good relations with the leading companies.

Research Assistant

The Sustainable Fisheries Partnership seeks a dynamic individual to be part of our Research Department. The Mission of the SFP is to “maintain healthy ocean and aquatic ecosystems, enhance fishing and fish-farming livelihoods and secure food supplies. The Partnership improves access to information to guide responsible seafood sourcing, and enhances the ability of seafood companies and partners to improve fish-farming and capture fisheries.” The SFP achieves its mission by helping leading retailers and suppliers make responsible seafood sourcing decisions, and to improve sources that currently do not their meet requirements. The SFP has worked extensively on wild capture fisheries, and is now extending its work to fish farming.

The success of the SFP depends on high quality research and analysis in fisheries science, marine conservation, global supply chains, NGO activism, corporate lobbying, and fisheries policy and management decision-making. The SFP aims to develop a small generalist research team on-staff, as the hub of an extensive worldwide network of external global experts in specific issues and fisheries. The Research Assistant position will assist the Research Director with fisheries research activities within the scope of SFP.

Ideally the Research Assistant will be located in the SFP regional office in JAKARTA, Indonesia.

Specific Responsibilities:

  1. FishSource: Carry out and help populate and update the FishSource database with critical information on the sustainability of major fisheries worldwide. The focus will be to keep tracking the latest stock assessment reports and to fill in information on top sources of fishmeal and fish oil in the world using FishSource interface. Fact-check contributions to FishSource by external authors.
  2. Fisheries Improvement Partnerships: Carry out and help direct research on retail and supply chains and fisheries policy-setting processes to identify strategic private sector partners in each of SFP’s focus fisheries/marine conservation areas.
  3. Project development: Assist Research Director in developing additional fisheries for SFP to initiate improvement partnerships

Qualifications:

  1. Master degree required in Fisheries or other related background, thorough knowledge and practical experience of stock assessment methods is an advantage.
  2. Ability and experience in researching and producing high quality of reports.
  3. Excellent oral and written English.
  4. Ability to work in a flexible, informal environment, and to take the initiative and work as part of a team as well as independently.

Finance Manager

Background: The mission of the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) is to maintain healthy ocean ecosystems, enhance fishing livelihoods and secure food supplies. The Partnership improves access to information to guide responsible seafood sourcing, and enhances the ability of seafood companies and partners to influence government fisheries policies and management practices to improve fisheries.

Over the past 14 months, SFP has grown from two to twenty one staffs, and working in more than ten countries. SFP has rapidly become a recognized leader in efforts to engage global seafood supply chains to improve fisheries and aquaculture. In late 2008, SFP will receive 501© 3 status that provides opportunity and challenges at the same time in the organization structure and governance, including finance management. Finance Manage position is identified as critical position to ensure SFP financial system is developed and meet requirements from the donors and provide sufficient support to project staffs.

Report
This position will report to Chief Operations Officer (COO) based at SFP office in Depok, Indonesia

Role:
The SFP is looking for a high caliber individual to become Finance Manager to be based at SFP Office in Depok, Indonesia. The position is responsible to first develop and implement financial procedures/protocols to ensure effective support to project and overall smooth administration of the office and as well as grant reporting and administration. The position is also responsible for budgeting and tracking, work closely with other members of SFP staffs to ensure timely and high quality project and financial reporting to donors.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Minimum 10 years experience working as Finance Manager and/or Accountant, preferably with International Non Governmental Organization.
  2. Has Master degree in Accounting or Finance Management (lower degree is considered with extensive working experience).

  4. Excellent communication and organization skills
  5. Ability to work in a flexible, informal environment, and to take the initiative and work as part of a team as well as independently.
