Indonesia is the fourth largest blue swimming crab producer in the world, and the major source of imports to the United States. Phillips Seafood and others in the Indonesian industry developed their own initiative, the Indonesian Crab Producers Association, to address sustainability issues. The Association invited SFP to make a presentation about the
Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Fishery Improvement Partnerships, and discuss opportunities to enhance the sustainability of Indonesian blue crab fisheries. With a grant from Sustainable Fisheries Fund and matching contributions from US Importers, the fishery is currently undergoing the MSC pre-assessment process.
