At SFP, we see partnership and collaboration as vital, to ensure that our efforts achieve consensus within the industry and the wider conservation community, and to broaden the audience for our fisheries sustainability work. These collaborations include technical advice and support to industry groups, such as Sea Pact; work with multinational organizations and national governments to improve fisheries management and policy, such as in the Global Marine Commodities Project (GMC); and cooperation with other fisheries and conservation organizations to develop joint products, recommendations, and tools, as we do in the Certification and Ratings Collaboration (C&R) and the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions (CASS).

Sea Pact is a collaborative group of leading North American seafood companies dedicated to driving stewardship and continuous improvement of social, economic, and environmental responsibility throughout the global seafood supply chain. SFP serves as an advisor to Sea Pact, and provides guidance to its member companies on a regular basis on project funding and how best to utilize their collective resources to promote positive sustainability gains.

Overfishing, driven in part by growing global seafood demand, has become a major threat to marine biodiversity, leading to negative impacts on ocean health, global food security, and the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on fisheries capture and production. To address these issues, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) is working with the United Nations Development Programme and the Ministries and Bureaus of Fisheries and Planning of Costa Rica, Ecuador, Indonesia, and the Philippines in an interregional initiative aimed at improving fisheries sustainability and increasing global demand for sustainably produced seafood: the Global Sustainable Supply Chains for Marine Commodities Project (GMC). With funding support from the Global Environment Facility, the GMC project promotes resource conservation through the use of market-based tools. 

As part of the GMC project team, SFP works to combine information resources and improvement activities to mobilize market forces to achieve more sustainable fisheries. This work includes promoting sustainable sourcing among major importers and retailers, providing support to fishery improvement projects (FIPs) in target countries, working with supply chains engaged in tuna and mahi-mahi fisheries to advocate for improved regional fisheries management, and expanding the coverage of SFP’s sustainability information systems (FishSource, Metrics, and the FIP tracking tool).

SFP is a member of the Certification and Ratings Collaboration (C&R), which brings together five global seafood certification and ratings programs working to ensure healthy oceans. Together with the Aquaculture Stewardship Council, Fair Trade USA, the Marine Stewardship Council, and Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch, we coordinate our programs to increase our impact, so that more seafood producers move along a path toward environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

As part of C&R, we have developed the Sustainable Seafood Data Tool, which uses publicly available global production data for farmed and capture fisheries to provide a global analysis of the sustainable seafood landscape and give seafood buyers, mid-chain suppliers, producers, and other stakeholders a way to track progress and prioritize improvements. In addition, the C&R members have laid out the unique and common features of our programs, and explained how certification and ratings are critical components of sustainable seafood.

The Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions (CASS) connects leading conservation groups from the Americas, Europe, and Japan that work throughout the supply chain, from fishers and fish farmers to retailers and restaurants. SFP has been a part of CASS since it was established in 2008 and is a member of the CASS Advisory Board. 

We have collaborated with our CASS partners to establish a Common Vision – six steps that companies can take to develop and implement sustainable seafood policies. These include: 

  1. Make a public commitment
  2. Collect data on seafood products
  3. Make responsible sourcing decisions
  4. Be transparent
  5. Educate staff, customers, and vendors
  6. Support improvements in fisheries and aquaculture.

Our latest work with CASS was a collaboration to develop the CASS Strategic Plan for 2020-2024, which outlines a continued strategy to work together to ensure that seafood production is environmentally, socially, and financially responsible. The three core strategies of the plan include setting clear expectations around seafood production, aligning economic incentives and policy reform efforts, and using shared data to assess needs and prioritize actions.
